During Regular Tournament Play
BARRINGTON, Rhode Island (June 18, 2011) – CVS Caremark Charity Classic co-hosts Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade announced today that Rickie Fowler has withdrawn from the 2011 Charity Classic. Fowler withdrew because of a minor knee injury sustained at the U.S. Open.
“Rickie has made the difficult decision to withdraw at the advice of his trainer and physical therapist,” said Fowler’s agent, Sam MacNaughton. “He tweaked his knee, and while there is no damage or pain of consequence, enough fluid and swelling have occurred that he will spend next week at home resting. He looks forward to returning to the CVS Caremark Charity Classic in the future.”
Replacing Fowler is David Toms, a seven-time member of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic main field. Toms’ most recent appearances were in 2009 and 2010, where he and partner Nick Price finished in first and seventh place, respectively.
“We’re sorry Rickie won’t be able to join us at this year’s CVS Caremark Charity Classic,” said co-hosts Faxon and Andrade. “We’re thrilled that 2009 co-champion David Toms was able to join us and are confident he will bring lots of enthusiasm and excitement to the event.”
Toms, winner of the 2001 PGA Championship, recently picked up his 13th official career victory at the 2011 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
